Zirconia Ceramic Grinding Solution for Industrial Battery Materials
The density of zirconia beads depends on their zirconia content. Since zirconium has a high atomic mass, the higher the zirconia content, the higher the density of the beads. Yttria-stabilized zirconia beads typically reach a density of 6.0 g/cm³, stabilized with 5% yttrium oxide (Y₂O₃).
Yttria-stabilized zirconia beads are also referred to as pure zirconia beads. Stabilizers are required during sintering to prevent cracking or defects, so a 100% zirconia composition is not currently feasible.
Higher density means greater momentum, which improves grinding efficiency but also increases wear on the sand mill. The flow rate and viscosity of the slurry are critical factors:
Low-density zirconia beads are suitable for low-viscosity slurries; overly dense beads tend to settle at the bottom, leaving upper slurry insufficiently ground.
High-density zirconia beads are ideal for high-viscosity slurries.
Selection should also consider attrition resistance test results and actual performance. Zirconia beads have high strength and can withstand high-speed sand mills without breaking, with extremely low grinding wear.
Saino zirconia beads are produced by titration molding in electrolyte, with attrition loss as low as 0.4 ppm. Yttria-stabilized zirconia beads have become the industry mainstream choice.
