Nine Common Methods to Reduce Wear of Zirconia Grinding Balls

2026-03-06

Zirconia beads and zirconia grinding balls both refer to spherical grinding media made from zirconia. They are generally used for ultra-fine grinding and dispersion of materials requiring high viscosity and high hardness. They are mainly applied in the grinding of electronic ceramics, magnetic materials, lithium battery materials, food, pigments, dyestuffs, coatings, inks, special chemical industries, and other materials.

Zirconia ceramic balls feature high bending strength, high compressive strength, excellent wear resistance, high toughness, and outstanding thermal insulation properties. As ultra-fine grinding media, zirconia beads are an ideal product among grinding media.

However, the high toughness of zirconia grinding balls is due to the presence of stabilizers, and this high toughness is time-dependent. For example, zirconia ceramic components will undergo degradation after being exposed to air for a period of time, resulting in serious performance decline or even cracking. In addition, zirconia grinding beads lose their metastable phase at high temperatures and thus no longer exhibit high toughness. Therefore, zirconia beads used as grinding media cannot be used for a long time at high temperatures or at room temperature. These two shortcomings — inability to withstand high temperatures and poor aging stability — have seriously restricted the development of zirconia beads as grinding media.

For ultra-fine powder materials at the micron or nanometer level, nothing is more important than purity. Inevitably, some wear occurs when zirconia beads are used as grinding media, and the worn zirconia becomes impurities in high-purity powders. Excessive impurities will inevitably affect the performance and product value of high-purity powders.

There are nine common methods to reduce the wear of zirconia beads:

1.Select different zirconia beads according to the linear speed of the ball mill.

2.Do not use zirconia beads of mixed materials; ensure consistent physical and chemical properties. Use products from the same manufacturer and batch to avoid mixing.

3.The filling ratio of zirconia beads should not be too high, generally not exceeding 85%.

4.Different viscosities of ground materials require corresponding densities of zirconia beads.

5.Regularly remove zirconia beads with excessively small particle sizes.

6.Keep the particle size of zirconia beads as uniform as possible.

7.When cleaning a sand mill with zirconia beads, use a low rotation speed — not higher than 1000 rpm. For mechanical speed control, use inching operation.

8.Regularly inspect areas with high stress concentration in sand mill components and eliminate potential risks.

9.For grinding high-value-added powders that require high purity, silicon nitride beads can replace zirconia beads for better cost and performance advantages.

The above nine methods for reducing the wear of zirconia beads should be applied according to the actual operating environment and working conditions.
