Do the zirconia beads need to be cleaned before use?

2025-11-25

After a series of production processes, zirconia beads undergo high-temperature sintering, followed by polishing, sieving, and final packaging for storage. During the packaging process, the beads may come into contact with dust, so it is necessary to determine whether cleaning is required based on the application environment.

In industrial applications—such as grinding paints, coatings, color pastes, and suspending agents for use in sand mills or ball mills—new zirconia beads can be used directly without additional cleaning.

However, for high-precision scenarios like sterile laboratory applications (e.g., DNA extraction, bacterial isolation, or nucleic acid purification), high-temperature sterilization is recommended in the laboratory to ensure experimental accuracy.

Cleaning Methods for Zirconia Beads

  1. Place the zirconia beads in a ball mill, add clean water for self-grinding for several minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry.
  2. Soak the beads in laboratory detergent overnight, rinse with tap water to remove detergent residues, and finally rinse with distilled water.
  3. Zirconia beads are resistant to acids, alkalis, and solvents, and can be cleaned with strong acids, strong alkalis, or resins. However, harsh chemical substances are not recommended to avoid damage.
